We can’t get enough of mob movies and certainly get excited any time a new one that looks halfway decent is coming out. Gangster Squad is a chronicle of the LAPD’s fight to keep East Coast Mafia types out of Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s. The movie has a great lineup of actors including Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte, and the lovable Emma Stone. Check out the trailer:
This isn’t our first post about the upcoming Batman movie – but Warner Bros. just released a third trailer forThe Dark Knight Rises and we simply couldn’t resist sharing it. As we mentioned in our first article, we’re super pumped to see Batman take on Bane in the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise. We’re also not dreading seeing Anne Hathaway in the Catwoman outfit.
When I was a kid Arnold Schwarzenegger movies were pretty much the coolest thing around. Now one of his classics, the 1990 sci-fi action/thriller Total Recall, has been remade with Colin Farrell reprising his role. The trailer for this version looks cool, but there is still the possibility that it will suck – but then again, how can it be bad if both Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in it? Hits theaters August 3rd. MmmMMmMm Kate Beckinsaleeeeee….
Even though they are yellow and animated, The Simpsons are one of the best known families in the US. The show has had remarkable success, starting as a segment on the Tracy Ullman Show and then into a half-hour show on Fox in 1989. Twenty-three seasons later it’s America’s longest running sitcom and Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa & Maggie are still at it. All success stories have a beginning, and if you’re feeling nostalgic, get a copy of the The Simpsons Season 1. The art and voices were a bit crude the first time around – but hey, that’s part of the charm.
We write about a lot of fast cars, but what about the guys who can really drive them? You don’t have to be huge Formula One fan to enjoy the documentary Senna, but it’s a must-see for race enthusiasts. All audiences will appreciate this look into the life of Brazilian rock-star driver Ayrton Senna, who despite being an international sensation always seemed to keep up his humility and charm. Ayrton Senna was a man who had relentless passion for racing, which was only matched by his love for his church, family, and home country of Brazil. Even with his vast success, Ayrton still faced adversity as a Brazilian driver in the European-dominated world of Formula One Racing in the 1980’s – and this film does a superb job of illustrating the career of the short-lived 3-time F1 World Champion.
The debut album, Cross, by the French electronic duo Justice received critical acclaim, and I have to say – I think their second album is even better. Audio, Video, Disco. is noticeably softer and more melodic than the hard-hitting Cross, and that is by no means a bad thing. Tracks like Canon retain the power-drive-thumping Justice is best known for while songs such as On’n'On and Audio, Video, Disco. provide uplifting vocal layers. If you like bands such as Daft Punk, you’ll most definitely get your $9.99’s worth with this album.

They say you should never judge a book by its cover, but sometimes movie titles can be unncessarily misleading. To better balance the universe, we wanted to take a stab at renaming some films we felt weren’t properly named – which has no correlation to how good we thought the movies were (exception: #2). So without further adieu, here is Frachelli’s list of the 5 most inaccurately named movies:
#5 UP
UP should have been called Down. It was extremely sad, especially for an animated movie.
#4 The Saint
The Saint was about a conning, blackmailing, thief. It should have been called The Criminal. That being said, Val Kilmer is the man.
#3 Life is Beautiful
A large portion of Life is Beautiful takes place in a concentration camp. It should have been called Life is Really Cruel and Terrible. By the way, this was a fantastic movie and the lead won an Oscar – definitely a must see for cinema fans, but bring the kleenex.
#2 The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
Calling this movie anything other than The Biggest Waste of an Hour and 44 Minutes is simply false advertising.
#1 Drive
A movie called Drive where the main character is a Driver. Hmm, you’d expect a lot of driving, right? Wrong. There were more silent pauses then there was vehicular movement in this film. It should have been called Stare.
There isn’t really anything more grim than the end of the world, but Steve Carell can somehow make it funny. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World hits theaters June 22nd and Carell’s character is joined by his neighbor (played by the absolutely beautiful Keira Knightley) after his wife takes off in a panic as an asteroid nears Earth. Also featuring the hilarious Patton Oswalt, this summer movie looks like it can be a good one. In the meantime, check out the trailer!
There’s no debating that the last Spider-Man movie left something to be desired, but a reboot starring The Social Network’s Andrew Garfield as the web-slinging Peter Parker looks a lot more promising. July 3rd The Amazing Spider-Man hits the big screen and other stars include Martin Sheen, Sally Parker, Emma Stone and Denis Leary. This time around The Lizard is the nemesis and you can also catch the action in 3D. Check out the trailer!
I’m hard pressed to think of a DVD release that is less fitting for Valentines Day than the latest season of Beavis & Butt-Head, but sure enough it’s releasing on February 14th. I’m sure your wife or girlfriend won’t mind skipping the romantic dinner to stay home, eat nachos and worship The Great Cornholio. While I was excited yet skeptical of the new season of B&B (yes, I just called it B&B) – it certainly lived up to the original launch and is definitely worth the $20 Blu-ray pre-order price.
Lightsaber technology isn’t quite here yet, but we’re getting warmer. Kinect Start Wars for XBOX 360 will allow you to wield a lightsaber, pilot speeders & pod racers, and harness the force without a controller. While you won’t get to leave the galaxy, you’ll be able to force choke the crap out of opponents in your not so far, far away living room. Set with a release date of December 31st 2012, you can pre-order a copy of Kinect Star Wars now.
Since Avatar, it now seems like every big action or adventure flick comes to theaters in 3D. One would also think that any movies previously released in 2D (or as we like to call “flat”) just simply missed the boat. Think again. Very few movies warrant a re-release to theaters, but deservingly so, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace will be hitting the big screen in 3D on February 10th. We’ll definitely be making a donation to the box office to watch Obi-Wan and Darth Maul duke it out like we’ve never seen before – and we’re sure a ton of crazy Star Wars fans will too (even if they don’t edit out Jar-Jar for this release).
We previously shared some of The Black Keyswith you in a song of the week post, but felt it necessary to also remind you to check out their album El Camino. Like their other work, El Camino maintains their garage style blues rock sound in distinct fashion. All eleven tracks on the album are solid, and the following tunes really stood out: Lonely Boy,Little Black Submarines, Money Maker, Sister, & Mind Eraser. If you like the sound of real drums, distorted guitar, and would rather rock than fist-pump – you should definitely give this album a whirl.
