There isn’t really anything more grim than the end of the world, but Steve Carell can somehow make it funny. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World hits theaters June 22nd and Carell’s character is joined by his neighbor (played by the absolutely beautiful Keira Knightley) after his wife takes off in a panic as an asteroid nears Earth. Also featuring the hilarious Patton Oswalt, this summer movie looks like it can be a good one. In the meantime, check out the trailer!
Since Avatar, it now seems like every big action or adventure flick comes to theaters in 3D. One would also think that any movies previously released in 2D (or as we like to call “flat”) just simply missed the boat. Think again. Very few movies warrant a re-release to theaters, but deservingly so, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace will be hitting the big screen in 3D on February 10th. We’ll definitely be making a donation to the box office to watch Obi-Wan and Darth Maul duke it out like we’ve never seen before – and we’re sure a ton of crazy Star Wars fans will too (even if they don’t edit out Jar-Jar for this release).

The Dark Knight Rises will be the conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Batman series featuring Christian Bale as the caped crusader. Heath Ledger’s award winning portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight will be tough to top and this time Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway step in to play the bad guys (Bane and Catwoman). Below is the second trailer that’s been released so far – and come summer 2012, it looks like it’s going to be a good one.
There are few action/sci-fi movies as epic as Terminator 2: Judgement Day. I mean come on, the T1000 – does it get any cooler than that?? Directed by the legendary James Cameron, T2 displayed breakthrough special effects just like Cameron’s more recent film Avatar. Plus, you get great lines from Arnold such as “Hasta La Vista Baby.” This Blu-ray Skynet edition is full of special features and is currently a great bargain at $9.49.
In what seems to be a dramatic version of The Hangover, I Melt With You is an upcoming film about four middle-aged friends who’s drug filled annual reunion spins out of control and resurfaces an old pact they made. The friends are played by Thomas Jane (Hung), Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven (Entourage), and Christian McKay. While it got mixed reactions at the Sundance Film Festival due to the amount of drug use, you’ll be able to form your opinion when Magnolia Pictures releases On Demand on Nov. 4, before its limited theatrical run on Dec. 9.

While his real identity is hidden, the secretive street artist Banksy has made quite a name for himself in the art world as well as quite a few bucks. While some may question whether or not the documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop was a bit of a hoax by the mysterious artist – it’s nonetheless a fascinating look into the world of street art. While the film shows the work of street artists such a Banksy and Shepard Fairey, it’s mostly about Thierry Guetta – a clothing shop owner who becomes obsessed with filming street artists and then becomes an overnight pop-art sensation. Whether you’re a big art fan or not, this award wining documentary shouldn’t be missed.
Most movies these days aren’t too great but the trailer for DRIVE looks pretty promising. Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood Stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver. Co-stars include Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), Brian Cranston (Breaking Bad) and Carey Mulligan (An Education). The film received a standing ovation at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival – so check out the trailer and look for DRIVE in theaters August 16th.
Office Space has grown to be a cult classic comedy since it’s relatively quiet box office release in 1999. Created and directed by Mike Judge (Beavis and Butt-Head, King of the Hill) the film ingeniously satirizes office life by following three disgruntled programmers in a 90’s software company. Complete with awkward office birthday cake moments, irritating bosses, and constantly malfunctioning printers, Office Space is a hilarious movie with well crafted characters. It even steps into the world of chain restaurants when the main character Peter (Ron Livingston) starts dating a waitress (Jennifer Aniston) from Chotchkie’s – a fictional chain that seems to look a lot like a TGIF. Best of all it’s less than ten bucks on Amazon right now.

Recently Michael Caine is best known for his rolls in Inception and the latest two Batman movies, but he’s had a remarkable career in cinema since the ’60’s. Caine is a two-time Academy Award winner and it really shows in his stellar performance in Harry Brown. After losing his friend to murderous gang that is terrorizing his neighborhood, Harry takes the law in his own hands – despite his age and failing health. Harry Brown tells the “fed-up vigilante” story seen in many films, but few do it with the grit and fervor that Michael Caine provides in the lead role.
Some movies are blockbusters and others are classics. Then, there are the cult classics. Donnie Darko may not have made a huge splash when it was released in theaters in 2001 (it lost money for the studio) but has since formed a large dedicated following. This haunting yet charming psychological thriller follows the life of troubled teenager Donnie Darko, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Donnie starts sleepwalking and hallucinating, but perhaps there’s more to what’s happening than a mental disorder. The plot entwines Donnie’s visions of doom with the lighthearted suburban characters that surround him – allowing the mood to switch from humorous to creepy at any moment. The film is also supported by a solid cast including Patrick Swayze, Drew Barrymore, and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

I love cinema and am very hard pressed when asked the question, “what’s your favorite movie?” That being said, undoubtedly in my top ten is Martin Scorcese’s Goodfellas. Under the hands of a master director, with lead rolls played by Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta – the movie was destined for greatness. The film embarks through humor, drama, violence and suspense as it follows the story of real life gangster Henry Hill (Liotta). A must see for crime movie buffs.
Famous movie character Bullitt had it all – A well respected and tenacious detective with a hot girlfriend and a cool ride. Featuring car chases that were ahead of it’s time, Bullitt is a must see man movie. On top of the San Francisco-hill-jumping chase scenes, Bullitt also touts a thrilling plot and bad-ass acting from the king of cool – Steve McQueen. Originally released in 1968, it’s still awesome decades later and currently only $8 on Blu-ray at Amazon. No brainer!
