Piedra Azul Tequila

The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos is traditionally celebrated on November 1-2 (shortly after many celebrate Halloween). Over the course of two nights, the dead are believed to rise from their resting places and visit with the living. Memories of those who have passed come alive, and relatives prepare special foods, decorations, and of course, libations. Flowers, candy skulls, and favorite things to drink are offered to spirits of loved ones – and tequila has its time and place. Piedra Azul Tequila was kind enough to provide a candy skull and bottle of their authentic white tequila with Frachelli to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. Also here’s a fun recipe for an appropriately themed cocktail called the Vampira…

The Vampira

Vampira Cocktail

1 ½ ounces Piedra Azul Blanco (100% Blue Agave)
1 ounce Clamato
1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
Mexican Squirt or other Grapefruit Soda
Lemon wheel or wedge garnish

Fill a 10-ounce glass with ice. Scatter salt on the ice, then pour in the tequila, hot sauce, Clamato, and lemon juice. Top up the glass with grapefruit soda and stir gently. Garnish with lemon and serve immediately.

Spicebox Spiced Rye Whisky

spicebox spiced rye whisky

If you’re looking for a new whisky to try out, take a swig of Spicebox Spiced Rye Whisky. This Canadian made booze is a blend of 3, 4, 5, and 6 year old whiskies and is also infused with vanilla and other spices. The rye used in the blend also brings out tastes of pepper and fruit, giving it a robust taste. Very reasonably priced at around $20 a bottle, Spicebox goes great on the rocks or with ginger ale.

Moscow Mule Copper Mug

copper mug

If you’re feeling nostalgic, pour yourself a drink in a copper mug. In the 1950′s, the Moscow Mule became a popular mixed drink and the preferred drinkware was a copper cup. To make a Moscow Mule, simply mix two parts vodka, one part lime juice, and 3 parts Ginger Beer. This 16oz copper Moscow Mule Mug pays homage to the drink and features tin lining and brass accents. Even if the Moscow Mule isn’t up your alley, this copper mug can certainly be used for beer, black coffee, and other manly beverages.

Crystal Skull Shot Glass

crystal skull shotglass

If you’re drinking some hard hooch, what’s more fitting than slamming it down with a “crystal skull” shot glass? Made of handblown glass, this “Doomed” shot glass pays homage to the Skull of Doom, which Mayan legend claims has the power of life and death along with other mystical powers. The skull inside the glass will fill with 2.5 ounces of booze, which with enough use – may lead you to believe you have mystical powers.

bulldog ginIf you’re a gin drinker, give BULLDOG Gin a whirl. This award-winning Gin is handcrafted in London, but features 12 botanicals from 8 different countries. Quadrupile distilled and infused with Poppy, Dragon Eye, Lemon, Cassia, Almond, Juniper, Orris, Lotus Leaves, Licorice, Lavender, Angelica, and Coriander (think that’s all 12) – BULLDOG Gin was named as a “Top 50 Spirit” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Priced around $23 for a 750ml bottle, it’s very reasonable on the wallet too.

Southern Comfort Fiery Pepper

If booze mixed with hot sauce is something that entices you, we have just the thing. Last night we attended a launch party for Southern Comfort Fiery Pepper, a new liquor infused with original Tabasco brand pepper sauce. When it hits shelves and bars this fall, it’ll likely be consumed via shots (by young 20′s males beating their chests) but as we learned last night… it also makes for some tasty spicy cocktails and will be at home in a Bloody Mary.

Portside Flask

You never know when you’re going to need a swig of booze to warm you up or calm your nerves. This fun nautical-themed flask is cleverly designed to resemble a porthole. Made from polished stainless steel and glass, you’ll be able to fill this flask up with 4 oz of your favorite liquor and monitor how much you have left. A great gift for guys who like to boat and sail (and drink) – it will also make for a nice home or apartment decoration when not in use.
